ON THIS DAY: 14 December – League double over the Seagulls

A look through the archives to see what was happening to Reds on the 14th December in previous years…….

Our only Football League win on this day was back in 1963 when Reds recorded a 1-0 success over Brighton & Hove Albion at Borough Park.  The narrow victory completed a league double as we had won at the Goldstone Ground on the opening day of the season.

Geoff Martin

Geoff Martin scored in both matches against Albion including the winner at Workington.  A left winger by trade, Martin chipped in with ten league goals in the promotion campaign and was a very popular player during his time at the club.

Brighton drew at Barrow that season and won at Carlisle United but lost on their first visit to West Cumberland.

Other successes on our own patch on this particular day included a 3-0 victory over Trafford in 2002 and a hard fought 1-0 win over Bishop Auckland two years later.

Glenn Murray

Glenn Murray scored twice in the comfortable win over Trafford – his first from the penalty spot, the other a firm header and that was after Robert Ennis’ goal had given us the lead.

Reds’ 1-0 victory over Bishop Auckland in 2004 was a significant one as it took us seven points clear at the top of the Unibond League Premier Division.

Mathew Henney’s superb half volley proved decisive – he blasted the winner beyond former Reds’ ‘keeper, Kevin Wolfe – but, in truth, it was an awful game.

And seven years ago, whilst Reds were losing at home to AFC Telford United (0-1), Danny Grainger was on the bench for St. Mirren in their 2-0 reverse at Aberdeen.
