On this day – 13 July
A look back at some of Reds pre-season games on 13th July in previous years……….
2019
Twelve months ago, we were unable to play any pre-season matches at Borough Park and one game switched at short notice was the trip to Barrow to take on Ian Evatt’s National League outfit.
Reds were Barrow’s equals in an impressive first half which finished goalless although, to be fair, the hosts were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Josh Calvert clattered Josh Kay.
Former Reds’ ‘keeper, Joel Dixon, made a couple of outstanding saves to thwart Conor Tinnion (at 0-0) and Dav Symington (1-2) but could do nothing to keep out Kieran Maguire’s fine goal.
Goals from Angus, Greaves and Hindle eventually paved the way to a 3-1 home win.
There were less than a couple of dozen Workington supporters in the 470 attendance.
2014
We met Annan Athletic in the final of the Raydale Cup at Gretna with an even contest finishing goalless after ninety minutes.
The outcome was decided after a penalty shoot-out with Annan lifting the trophy after emerging 4-2 winners. Lee Andrews and Phil McLuckie missed their respective spot-kicks but Aden Wainwright and Gavin Skelton did manage to convert from twelve yards against Annan’s ‘keeper at the time, Alex Mitchell.
Dan Wordsworth had the misfortune to be sent-off in the second half.
The action picture above shows Jake Smith and Kyle May attempting to get to grips with Josh Todd.
2013
Not the best of afternoons for Reds who were soundly beaten, 0-4, by Gateshead on a very warm day in front of a sparse crowd.
Lee Andrews skippered a makeshift side which saw several trialists named on the team sheet including goalkeepers Greg Fleming and Tom Courtney, Dom Kennedy, Conor Doyle, Willie Gibson, Tito Davidson and Ben Hoskin.
The visitors had things their own way throughout, scoring twice in each half.
