ON THIS DAY: 12 March – Victory at New Manor Ground & snowball fights!
Reflecting on the highs and lows Reds have experienced on the 12th March in previous years…….
2016 Ilkeston (away) 3-0 Reds maintained their 100% winning record at the New Manor Ground with a comfortable afternoon against Ilkeston’s team of talented youngsters. And speaking of youngsters, Connor Hammell made his Workington debut in this Evo-Stik Premier Division encounter.
Anthony Wright bundled home the opening goal from close range and Scott Allison ensured a comfortable winning margin with two goals after the break – the first a header followed by a trademark crisp finish.
2014 Bradford Park Avenue (home) 0-1 Reds suffered a fifth 1-0 defeat in six visits to the Horsfall Stadium and edged a little closer to the relegation trap door. The lively Chib Chilaka scored the winning goal in the first half which condemned Workington to a 19th defeat in Skrill North with plenty more to come, sadly.
2013 Brackley Town (home) 0-0 A commendable display of guts and character saw a makeshift Reds team hold third placed Brackley with Joel Dixon helping us record a rare clean sheet.
Joel had spent his early years with Sunderland and another who followed a similar route was Callum Hope who made his debut for Reds after coming in on loan.
Joe Geenhalgh was nominated Reds man-of-the-match in this entertaining Tuesday evening contest.
2011 Droylsden (home) 2-0 We conceded two penalties in this game yet still managed to win. Aaran Taylor saved Droylsden’s first spot kick at 0-0 then Jody Banim blasted a second penalty into the river when Reds were 1-0 ahead.
Jonny Wright had opened the scoring with Nick Rogan securing the victory with a well taken second.
Not much joy for Carlisle United on this day, they lost 6-0 at Peterborough United!
2005 Leek Town (away) 1-1 Luck deserted Reds and Marc Green in particular when we conceded a ninetieth minute equaliser at Harrison Park.
Matt Henney netted to give Reds the lead in a closely fought encounter and it looked as though it would secure a narrow win. That was until Martin McDonald’s shot hit Marc and deflected into the net past a stranded Adam Collin to restore parity late in the day.
2002 Rossendale United (away) 2-1 A first win in six outings boosted morale amongst players and supporters alike and, for the ninth game in a row, there were no bookings or red cards suggesting that discipline was consistently good.
Brian Dawson’s well taken goal midway through the first half gave us a deserved lead but the hosts were back on terms soon after the restart. Substitute Mike Hodgson then came on and scored a 75th minute winner for Reds.
1996 Fleetwood (home) 3-0 A snow storm hit the area late in the afternoon and the pitch was covered at the start of each half.
Despite the conditions, both teams served up an entertaining game. Martin Henderson pounced to open the scoring and the lead was doubled before half time thanks to Garry Wright. The latter netted again in the second half to record his first brace in the NPL.
The weather restricted the crowd to 137 but some of those engaged in a snowball ‘fight’ during the interval.
1994 Warrington Town (away) 1-2 Another late goal contributed to our downfall with Warrington scoring a stoppage time decider. The hosts had gone in front but Danny Wheatley levelled matters when he converted a penalty.
But a good performance deteriorated in the last ten minutes.
Danny Wheatley was sent off after picking up two yellow cards and the official who suggested he should take an early shower was a Mr D Wheat!
1988 Caernarfon Town (away) 0-3 Reds never won at Caernarfon’s Oval ground and this comprehensive defeat sent us back to the foot of the table. A Howard Kirkbride shot which hit the post was the nearest we came to a goal.
For the second successive Saturday, Reds had gone down to Welsh opposition.
1983 King’s Lynn (home) 0-1 Reds went into this game on the crest of a wave having pieced together an unbeaten run of thirteen matches. Joe Wojciechowicz’s side had won eleven and drawn two of their previous thirteen games scoring thirty six goals in the process.
But the Norfolk outfit burst the bubble and Jim Kabia’s first half goal left the home support despondent.
1977 Colchester United (home) 2-4 The referee for this Fourth Division encounter was Bob Matthewson who, two months later, would take charge of the FA Cup final at Wembley.
No doubt he would be subjected to the verbal treatment at Borough Park but Reds could have no complaints about the outcome. They were actually 2-1 in front at half time, thanks to well taken goals from Eamon Kavanagh and Eddie Prudham, but Colchester swept us aside in the second half and completed a league double at our expense.
1965 Peterborough United (home) 1-0 Bill Hopper had played a big part (13 goals in 37 appearances) in our promotion season but most of his football was spent with the Reserves throughout ’64-65 campaign. He finished top scorer for the Reserves and his final goal for the first team helped us overcome the Posh at Borough Park.
1960 Hartlepools United (home) 3-0 ‘Pools’ finished at the foot of the Fourth Division and suffered two heavy defeats against Joe Harvey’s Reds.
Joe Wilson, Peter Harburn and Tommy Brownlee shared the goals which completed a league double.
1955 Chester (home) 1-1 Chester finished at the foot of the Third Division table at the end of the ’53-54 and ’54-55 seasons but they frustrated Reds on this particular occasion by securing a draw. The ever reliable Jimmy Dailey, who would finish top scorer again, was on target.
