On this day – 11 July

In normal circumstances, Reds would be easing into their pre-season programme of warm-up matches but in the absence of those, currently, we reflect on games played on the 11th July in previous years…….

2009

The annual match against Carlisle United at Borough Park was preceded by a tribute to Derek Lacey, the BBC Radio Cumbria commentator who had sadly passed away earlier that summer.

There was an unusual twist regarding the two goalkeepers (pictured) with ex. Red, Adam Collin, playing for United and former Blue, Tony Caig, turning out for Workington.

Reds were in the game for an hour, before eventually losing 3-1,with Josh Gowling and Yan Klukowski (2) sharing the goals for United.  Matt Henney netted Reds’ consolation in the second half.

1998

Peter Hampton’s first game as Workington manager was a low-key encounter against Queen of the South in Dumfries.

Although the players got changed at Palmerston, the match actually took place on a school pitch on the other side of town.

Queens, including future player and manager Derek Townsley, strolled to a 3-0 victory against a Reds team who used twenty-five players, including fourteen debutants!
