A look through the diaries to see what was happening to Reds on the 4th December in previous years…….
After numerous failures against Bridlington Town at Borough Park, in league and cup, we finally got the better of the East Yorkshire club on this day in 2004.
Kick-off for the NPL fixture was delayed following a mechanical problem with the team coach so the plan was to play a high tempo game and batter the opposition into submission (I think it is called a ‘high press’ nowadays), taking advantage of their late arrival.
Reds did that and dominated the first half only to concede a soft goal in the 44th minute.
But we got there in the end and Steve Birks’ first goal for the club restored parity early in the second half (pictured above). Man of the match, Ian Arnold, grabbed the winner as Reds finished deserved 2-1 winners.
We lost our Football League derby matches against Carlisle United in the sixties followed by the ‘lower profile’ encounters versus Barrow in the seventies.
The last Workington v. Barrow Fourth Division meeting was played here in 1971and the Holker Street boys claimed the bragging rights after a lone goal victory in front of a 4,329 attendance.
Workington’s best victory on 4th December was back in 1937 when we emerged 5-2 winners against Jarrow in a North Eastern League fixture at Lonsdale Park. No doubt about the man-of-the-match that day– with centre forward Alec Fisher scoring all five goals!
