On this day – 01 December
A look through the diaries to see what was happening to Reds on the 1st December in years gone by…….
Forty years ago we were on FA Cup duty – a Monday night replay against Carlisle United at Brunton Park.
It followed the goalless draw at Workington when Reds matched their Third Division neighbours.
Although we didn’t disgrace ourselves, Carlisle were in control throughout and two goals in each half saw them run out comfortable 4-1 winners.
Owen Brown and Peter Beardsley netted two goals apiece for the Blues with Graham Gill chipping in with the Reds reply.
United subsequently knocked Walsall and Mansfield Town out of the competition, before losing 5-0 at Bristol City in the 4th Round.

Ten years later in 1990, Reds were in NPL 1st Division action at Eastwood Town. It didn’t look so good after ten minutes when the home side had raced into a two goal lead. But Duncan Armstrong reduced the arrears before half time and it was ‘game on’.
Graeme Nicholson scored twice in the second half, including a late winner, to secure Reds’ first away win of the ’90-91 campaign and a first success at Coronation Park.

We have twice played Southport on this day, winning one and losing the other.
Back in 1956, Ken Chisholm scored the only goal of the match as we won at Haig Avenue for the second season running. Sixteen years later, we lost there 2-1 with Johnny Martin netting our consolation.

Not such a good day at Borough Park in 2007 as Reds fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Hucknall Town. Teenager Steven Rudd made his full debut, and acquitted himself well, but several of his new team mates were well below par including player/manager, Darren Edmondson. He was sent off for picking up two yellow cards, the second for pushing over a Hucknall player who was deliberately time wasting!
