OBITUARY: Derek Trail (1946 – 2020)
It is with the sadness that we report the passing of another Workington ‘old boy’, Derek Trail. He died earlier this week at the age of 74.
Derek was born in Leith and joined Rangers after spending his youth career with Tynecastle Athletic. He found it tough breaking into the first team at Ibrox but did make four appearances for them in the sixties.
He later played for Falkirk and from there moved to Workington in the summer of 1967.
An inside forward/winger, Derek made his debut on the opening day of the ’67-68 campaign (a 1-1 draw at York City) and spent two seasons at Borough Park making 46 starts plus a further 17 appearances as a substitute.
He scored in the Fourth Division against Peterborough United and Newport County at Borough Park and, in away matches, at Brentford, Scunthorpe United and Darlington. In addition, Derek bagged a few goals for the Reserves in the North Regional League.
Derek then joined Hartlepool United and later had a spell in Australia playing for a club in the Sydney area. On his return to Scotland, he had brief stints with Meadowbank Thistle and Alloa Athletic.
