Nathan Waterston: strength in-depth key to success
Reds forward Nathan Waterston has praised the current first-team squad’s strength in-depth.
Waterston, who netted in the win at Colne on Saturday to get Reds back to winning ways, was speaking at last night’s training session.
Starting with his strike which made it 0-3, a tap-in thanks to his pressing and a defensive lapse from the opposition, he revealed: “It was probably the easiest goal I’ve scored.”
“Coming on in conditions like that, it wasn’t easy, so anyone who comes on and presses like that helps the team massively.”
“I knew what my role was on Saturday and I’m happy to score and get the three points after two disappointing results going into the New Year.”
The 22-year-old, who returned to Borough Park in summer, has been in fine goalscoring form as of late and says it’s not only his confidence which is improving hitting the back of the net.
“It’s obviously massive for confidence, and I think throughout the team we’ve missed chances that we should score so getting one in the back of the net does boost your confidence.”
Reds were clinical at Colne, and Waterston says every member of the squad is focused on three points rather than any personal goalscoring targets.
“I don’t think anyone personally reflects on their own goals, we’re just trying to get three points – that’s all that matters
“Whoever scores, we’re more than happy to just to get three points.”
With Scott Allison and Charlie Bowman being the starting pair in last weekend’s 0-3 win, the competition for places up front is hot.
However, that doesn’t phase Waterston and believes it’s only beneficial for table-topping Reds.
“It’s really healthy for a team,” he said.
“We’ve got that strong squad. There’s a lot of depth and knowing there’s people that want your shirt, it’s only beneficial for the squad to try and play as well as you can and be consistent.”
“I think that’s what’s brought us success this year, our strength in-depth.”
“It’s one of them; if you play well, you keep your shirt but we’ve got a big enough squad to rotate the team around.”
Reds are back at Borough Park tomorrow to host fifth-place Marske United, kick-off 3pm.
