Recap

Cumberland Cup holders, Workington, made comfortable progress to the semi finals of this season’s competition when their makeshift side proved too strong for County League outfit, Unisun.

But the Carlisle club gave a good account of themselves and were certainly in the contest for the best part of eighty minutes.  Then, two goals in a minute broke their resistance and the home supporters could breathe a collective sigh of relief.

In keeping with their wonderful black and yellow shirts, Athletic were busy all night as they buzzed around making life difficult for the hosts.  They tackled, closed down their opponents effectively and counter-attacked when they could.

They just lacked that cutting edge in the final third and Danny Eccles, having his first run-out since early December, enjoyed a trouble-free evening.

Kitt Nelson was the only starter who had played for the first team at the weekend with Development Squad members Scott Williamson, Zak Walker, Chad Grisdale, Cain Pears and Harry Watson contributing for the full ninety minutes and Sam Christian and Owen Johnston given a seat on the bench.

But the most pleasing aspect of the night was Aidy Roxburgh playing for over an hour as he attempts to put an injury ravaged campaign behind him.

It was good to see him charging up and down the left flank and he seemed to enjoy his stint back on the grass as his long rehab took a positive step forward.

He looked in decent condition, forced the Unisun ‘keeper into a good save in the first half, but admitted afterwards that he tired noticeably after the interval.

Credit to Unisun who kept Workington at bay for much of the first half.  They eventually fell behind in the forty-fourth minute when Finlay Wallbank’s teasing cross towards the far post found Grisdale and he rose superbly to head home the opener.

Athletic goalkeeper, Craig Hunter, hardly had a serious shot to save in the opening half but he was busier in the second period and kept out four decent efforts from Reds, the best of which was a well struck Bobby Carroll shot which he pushed away to safety.

First team regulars Nelson and Greg McCaragher combined well for Reds’ second goal after eighty-one minutes.  Nelson’s trickery got him past two defenders before he pulled the ball back into McCaragher’s path who scored his first Borough Park goal with a sweet left-footed finish.

And less than a minute later, Pears netted a well taken third goal.  He collected the ball in a crowded penalty area but managed to thread the ball through a ruck of legs and into the far corner of the net for a precision finish with Hunter possibly unsighted by his own defenders.

Unisun forced four corners but were unable to carve out a consolation goal yet their efforts didn’t go unnoticed and they were applauded off the field.
