Recap

After four seasons in the County League, Reds’ Development Squad played their final match and signed off with a victory.  They will play their football in the JPL from the start of the ’24-25 campaign.

They hadn’t beaten Wigton in three previous attempts this season but took advantage of a weakened line-up fielded by the visitors and the fact they were reduced to ten men just fifteen minutes into the game.

Harvey Gordon was shown a straight red by the referee after a lunging tackle on Alfie Schofield.

Reds were already in front by that stage after Ben Carini had opened the scoring in the sixth minute, following a mix-up in the Wigton defence.

The Young Reds didn’t add to their tally until early in the second half, doubling their lead with the goal of the match in the forty-ninth minute.  A swift move down the left culminated in a superb left-footed strike from Luke Bewsher-Canon.

And when the same player grabbed his second, Reds’ third, after fifty-three minutes the afternoon was just about over for the ‘black and whites’.  This time, Bewsher-Canon was aided by a slight deflection which saw the ball loop over the ‘keeper and into the net.

Zak Walker’s run into the box was ended with a foul and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Bewsher-Canon turned down the opportunity for a potential hat-trick and Owen Johnston capped a fine performance by stepping forward and confidently converting the spot-kick for Workington’s fourth.

Wigton, to their credit, fought until the end and grabbed a consolation goal from Robbie Woodburn and it might have been a closer outcome had Suproto Mansur not pulled off three important saves.

Craig Johnston thanked the League and all their opponents with a parting message:

“We are restructuring the Development team next season and will play in a different competition but we wish the County League and all the teams in it the very best of luck moving forward.”

Team:  Suproto Mansur, Aston Mackay, Owen Johnston, Brad Barwise, Callum Bell, Ben Carini, Sam Christian, Aidan Howarth, Alfie Schofield, Luke Bewsher-Canon, Zak Walker.  Substitute – Bobby White
