Young Reds storm to victory
Reds’ Development Squad utilised their normal Monday night training slot to good effect by playing a hastily arranged friendly against a strong Athletic side at Lakes College.
And Brian Dawson was able to give valuable game time to the entire squad, fielding a different XI in each half.
There was no indication of what was to come after an even opening fifteen minutes, the Young Reds taking a lead thanks to a Matty Foster goal but Athletic restoring parity soon after through Ryan Connelly.
The Development Squad regained their slender advantage before half time with a fine headed goal from Ciaran Booty who met Thomas Houghton’s inch-perfect cross.
They started a period of domination upon the restart, underlined by further goals from Carl Lightfoot, Charlie Johnston and Louis Webster which established a 5-1 lead at one stage.
Brodie Richardson maintained Reds’ four goal advantage when he kept out Matthew Perry’s penalty.
Athletic did make the score-line a little more respectable from their perspective with a late consolation goal when Connelly netted his second.
