Recap

Three goals in seven minutes secures Reds’ victory.

Three goals in seven minutes mid-way through the first half tilted this useful workout in Reds’ favour.

They had fallen behind after just five minutes and it could have been worse as Town’s scorer, Dan Mooney, was then thwarted by two smart Aaran Taylor saves.

But a headed equaliser from Matty Douglas, a close range finish from Kieran Maguire, on his home debut, and a Conor Tinnion strike capped an excellent first half performance from the hosts.

David Hewson called upon twenty players, handing home debuts to Lewis Tidy, Brad Hubbold, Aaron Bradbury, Jason Walker and Kieran Maguire. The old and new blended well, particularly after conceding the first goal.

Mooney gained possession as Reds were pushing out and his pace took him clear and into a one-on-one situation with Taylor. His confident finish gave Fleetwood the lead but Taylor then blocked two Mooney shots in quick succession, prompting a Reds revival.

The outstanding Niall Cowperthwaite was unlucky not to equalise when his header thumped against the crossbar but Matty Douglas was first to react in a crowded area to firmly head home in the twentieth minute.

Two minutes later, new-look Reds were in front. Town goalkeeper Matt Urwin had parried an earlier shot but the ball fell conveniently to Maguire who drove the ball from ten yards. And Maguire then turned provider for Tinnion who despatched the ball into the corner of Urwin’s net after twenty five minutes.

Town’s Development Squad stepped up a gear on the restart and they had the ball in the net after a swift counter attack. But Mooney was denied a second goal after being flagged offside.

David Renyard, one of many substitutes introduced in the second half, went on a meandering run culminating in his shot hitting the post. The follow-up attempt from Aaron Bradbury was cleared off the Fleetwood line.

Two other Reds substitutes combined in another promising attack with Jamie Pattinson’s fine assist releasing Sheldon Mossop. The latter struck the ball firmly but Urwin responded with a routine save.

Town reduced the arrears ten minutes before the end when Shayden Morris raced clear past Chris O’Brien to score a goal quite similar to their first.

Good to see Cumbria’s number one Fleetwood fan on the Borough Park terraces – former Workington goalkeeping hero, Mike Rogan.
