Recap
Both sides created, and squandered, some good chances in this County League fixture yet it finished goalless – a rare score line at this level and Workington’s first since returning to the local scene.
Reds were excellent in possession but they couldn’t find a way past Craig Rule although Ben Davidson almost made the breakthrough, only for his shot to rebound off the post.
Athletic had a good spell before half time forcing Aaron Lister into a couple of good saves and having two further efforts cleared off the line before strong claims for a penalty were ignored by the referee.
Reds suffered a setback when Lewis Moore was injured in an accidental collision which saw his opponent land awkwardly on top of him, damaging his knee and ankle. The highs and lows of football for the unfortunate Moore – his previous game was making his first team debut!
Josh Palmer, Jack Brown and Davidson were guilty of missing further chances for Reds in the second half and, when Maryport finished the game strongly, they had to rely on some excellent defensive play and their substitute goalkeeper making a number of important saves.
Athletic had a gilt-edged chance to win it in the final minute but that opportunity was also wasted.
Workington used two goalkeepers in the game, Aaron Lister and Scott Paden-Gale, with both emerging with a clean sheet!
The point lifted Reds to second position in the County League table although they have completed more fixtures than the other seven teams.
Team: Lister (Paden-Gale), Percival, Moore (Whitehead D), Martin, Williamson, Stephenson (Webster), Lester, Pears, Palmer, Davidson (Rae), Dunstan (Brown).
