Recap
Reds concluded their protracted pre-season campaign with another fixture against higher ranked opposition, giving valuable game time to nineteen players.
The young Reds dominated the first half, playing some great football in the process, and the bright start was rewarded when Carl Lightfoot (inset) opened the scoring in the twentieth minute following a well worked corner routine.
Several other opportunities to add to the lead were squandered so they reached the interval just the one goal to the good.
After making eight changes at the break, the intensity and rhythm was lost enabling Gosforth to get a foothold in the game. They began to make life difficult for the hosts with their more direct approach.
The inevitable equaliser was a wind assisted thirty yard ‘screamer’ which beat the ‘keeper all ends up. And they added two further goals via set pieces highlighting their aerial superiority.
Dan Whitehead caused Gosforth a few problems in the second half but the contest was over by then.
A fourth goal just before the end was hard to take for Brian Dawson’s side who will play their inaugural Cumberland County League fixture next week.
