Recap

One defensive slip proved costly for Reds as in-form Hyde maintained their recent impressive record at Borough Park.

The Tigers came out on top in an evenly matched encounter, scoring the only goal of the match seconds before the half time break.  Just one minute of added time was signalled at the end of a first half Reds had shaded but enough for the visitors to get their noses in front.

Callum Spooner had dispossessed Jordan Little in the right back position, worked his way into the area before squaring the ball to Lewis Alessandra who had the simple task of rolling the ball into the vacant net.

It was tough on Reds who were probably ahead on points at that stage with the goal coming against the run of play.

And it took them much of the second half to recover as Hyde took control of matters.  But a late rally saw Workington throw the kitchen sink at Jordan Eastham’s goal and the collective sigh of relief from the visitors’ bench and travelling supporters suggested they were quite chuffed to leave Borough Park with three precious points.

In that late spell of pressure, Workington did everything but score.

Finlay Wallbank had a shot cleared off the line, Conor Tinnion’s effort was blocked resulting in optimistic claims for a hand-ball being ignored, Tinnion’s second effort was partially saved by Jordan Eastham who then bravely blocked Greg McCaragher’s follow-up effort and Dav Symington’s two late chances narrowly cleared the bar and were bravely blocked respectively.

Last week the goals flew in, on this occasion they didn’t.

But it certainly wasn’t one-way traffic and Jim Atkinson made three fine saves to keep Reds in contention, thwarting Manasse Mampala on two occasions and the lively Jack Redshaw on another.

Both sides were guilty of a poor final ball in the early exchanges and several openings were wasted.

Jordan Little put one header over the bar but was unlucky with a second attempt.  A diving header hit a colleague when it seemed destined for the net whilst Sam Hetherington, with the option of passing to the unmarked Kit Nelson, had a shot at goal himself but the effort lacked the power to trouble Eastham.

Jake Allan was well wide with a chance he had created himself whilst the two respective top scorers, Symington and Redshaw, both saw rising shots narrowly clear the opposition’s crossbar.

Ultimately, it was the goal in first half stoppage time that secured a fourth successive win for Hyde on Cumbrian soil, completing a seasonal treble over Reds in the process.

It wasn’t the worst performance of the season but a twelfth defeat now makes Reds’ next game at Gainsborough in a fortnight even more significant if they are to achieve a top half finish.
