MATCH REPORT: Penrith Ladies 4-0 Workington Reds Ladies
The A66 derby didn’t go to plan with Reds losing their Division One North encounter by four clear goals at Newton Rigg.
They experienced a ‘bad day at the office’ and fell to their heaviest defeat of the season.
Defensively, they have been superb this term but conceded two goals in each half against an impressive Penrith outfit who finished the day in fourth position. Reds remain in sixth, three points behind the Blues who have played two games fewer.
Beth Cater opened the scoring on the half hour mark with a fine shot from twenty yards and doubled the advantage ten minutes later to put the Blues firmly in the driving seat.
Matters didn’t improve after the break and any hopes of a fightback disappeared when Sarah Smith scored a third for the hosts, cashing in on more defensive uncertainty.
For once, the Reds rear-guard was led a merry dance and a disappointing afternoon was completed when Darcie Dixon scored Penrith’s fourth.
The previous week, Reds recorded their best league win of the season but this heavy reverse epitomised the highs and lows of football.
They will have a break from league action next Sunday and travel to play Chorley Women, for the second time in three weeks, this time in the North West Regional Plate.
