MATCH REPORT: Bolton Wanderers Girls 2-1 Workington Reds Ladies

Another decent performance on the road from Reds Ladies was in vain as they lost by the odd goal in three in their latest Division One North league fixture.

The hosts made the brighter start but Reds’ rear guard – Alice Kemp, Naomi Foster, El McDonald and Natalie Hooper – stood firm and dealt with what Wanderers had to offer.

It was still goalless at the interval but the hosts opened the scoring four minutes after the restart.  Shannon Gill netted the first of two fine goals to bring the game to life.

But Reds responded well and were back in contention in the sixty-eighth minute.  Kacey Rodgers’ graft forced an error in the home defence and Sophie Birkett (inset) took full advantage to lift the ball over the Bolton ’keeper to restore parity.

Morgan McGrady and Liv Bennett were causing problems for the home defence  and one McGrady effort rebounded to safety off the post.

The lively Gill scored her second goal, though, another well taken effort ten minutes from time sealing victory for Wanderers.

Liv Bennett’s impressive attacking work earned her the Reds’ ‘player-of-the-match’ accolade.

The Reds ended the day in 6th position in Division One North having obtained 16 points from 14 matches.

They take a break from league action next Sunday but will be back on the M6 again with a trip to Merseyside for an Argyle Sports Plate tie v. Alder.

Already this year, they have clocked up 1,000 motorway miles on the back five successive away games.

Team: Laura Miller, Alice Kemp, Naomi Foster, Eleanor McDonald, Natalie Hooper, Sophie Birkett, Keeley Holliday, Emi Rudd, Sophie Douglas, Morgan McGrady, Kacey Rodgers.  Substitutes – Linzi Donaldson, Hannah Fawkes, Olivia Bennett, Chloe Henderson.
