MATCH REPORT: Accrington Stanley Women 1-2 Workington Reds Ladies

Reds’ trip to East Lancashire proved successful as they became the first team in Division One North to lower the colours of Accrington Stanley.

Despite conceding the opening goal, Reds came back to win by the odd goal in three to end Stanley’s seven match unbeaten start to the season.

The hosts created several early chances and it was no surprise when Megan Rodriguez opened the scoring after seventeen minutes for a deserved lead.

Yet the visitors responded well and fought back to equalise through Morgan McGrady three minutes before the interval, with Emi Rudd providing the assist.

Having been forced to defend for long periods in the first half, it was more even after the break with Reds grabbing the decider thirteen minutes from time.

And it was McGrady, again, who grabbed the late winner as the team recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season.  She cut in from the left and sent a fine cross-shot past Tanya Nash in the home goal.

But it needed an excellent save from Reds’ ‘player-of-the-match’ Laura Miller to preserve the narrow lead.

The win lifted Reds up to fifth position in the table.

Next up for Reds is Morecambe Ladies who visit Derwent Park next Sunday.

Team: Laura Miller, Eleanor McDonald, Naomi Foster, Alice Kemp, Natalie Hooper, Chloe Henderson, Elli Ritchie, Sophie Birkett, Hannah Geen, Emi Rudd, Morgan McGrady.  Substitutes – Leah Cottier, Kacey Rodgers, Sydney Bragg, Anya Studholme.
