MATCH REPORT: Abbeytown Ladies 0-5 Workington Reds Ladies

Reds Ladies took a trip to the seaside and enjoyed a straightforward, comfortable Cumberland Cup victory over a gallant Abbeytown outfit at Silloth’s Eden Street ground.

After last week’s postponement, the match was played in pleasant, warm sunshine – a contrast to recent weeks when they have turned out in some horrendous weather.    

Chloe Henderson has been in great form lately and was inspirational once again.

She opened the scoring after seven minutes, saw another shot rebound off the upright and was also involved in Reds second and third goals.  Hannah Geen’s well taken goal five minutes before half time doubled the advantage and Sophie Birkett netted a third with the last attack of the half.

Geen (pictured) then bagged the goal of the game, a fine first time shot on the run, after sixty two minutes with Abbeytown restricted, by then, to a damage limitation exercise.  They rarely got in to Reds half and Laura Miller had a trouble free afternoon between the posts.

Skipper Linzi Donaldson saw a well struck free-kick rebound off the crossbar as Reds continued to dominate.

They wrapped up a good afternoon’s work when Henderson got her second, Reds’ fifth, seconds before the final whistle.

The game was tarnished following an injury to one of the Abbeytown players who was carried from the pitch with an ankle injury.

Reds will be taking the sea air again next week when they resume their league programme at Blackpool!
