MATCH PREVIEW: The final countdown

Just seven games remaining in what has been Workington’s thirty-seventh season of Northern Premier League football.

For the Reds it is seven opportunities to obtain more points in our quest to finish in the top half of the Premier Division table.  As far as the opposition is concerned, it is a chance to gather valuable points for different objectives.

Atherton Collieries and Stafford Rangers will believe they can still avoid the wooden spoon at the foot of the table whilst Worksop Town, Marine. Macclesfield and Guiseley will all be expecting a minimum three points, at our expense, to consolidate a berth in the play-offs.

That leaves Saturday’s opponents, Gainsborough Trinity, in a similar situation to ourselves – nothing but pride to play for.

As things stand, Trinity are in a better position to finish the campaign higher than us so it is an important fixture for both clubs.

Trinity’s recent excellent form has lifted them to 12th position and they are three points better off than 15th placed Reds.  Their home record, to date, is decent with eight wins, four draws and four defeats recorded.

Recently, they put together five consecutive wins – a sequence which ended last week at Ashton United.

Back in October they won 3-2 at Borough Park to kick-start their season, after a sluggish opening couple of months, and their record against us, over many years, suggests they will probably be slight favourites to complete a league double at the now named Kal Group Stadium.

In forty-one league (NPL and National North) encounters since 1977, Reds have recorded ten victories, Trinity have been successful on seventeen occasions with a draw the outcome no fewer than fourteen times.

Danny Grainger’s only previous visit to Gainsborough was for a friendly, nearly four years ago, and defeat (0-1) on that occasion leaves him looking for a first victory against ‘The Holy Blues’.  He will have Steven Rigg back in the squad but Bobby Carroll will still be absent through suspension.

Venue: Kal Group Stadium, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, DN21 2QW
