MATCH PREVIEW: The big kick-off
Six weeks of pre-season training and friendly matches will be put to one side on Saturday as the Northern Premier League campaign gets underway.
The serious stuff starts with Reds’ return to Step 3 football marked by a tough looking home game against Ashton United (3pm). Steve Cunningham’s side, who finished 14th in the Premier Division last term, have spent time in National North since we last met each other during the ’17-18 season.
They are expected to do well this term with the play-offs, at least, a target they are capable of.
There might be some familiar faces in the Robins line-up with former Workington players Cole Lonsdale and goalkeeper Luke Simpson appearing for them during pre-season. Others who have worn the red and white of both clubs in the past include Godwin Abadaki, Jacob Hazel, Millenic Alli, Ben McKenna and D’Arcy O’Connor.
They have established a decent record in west Cumbria in the past, winning at Borough Park on half a dozen occasions. Indeed, they have a good overall history against us winning thirteen matches in the series compared to our nine successes from the twenty-six league games played.
Danny Grainger has a near full squad to select from, ex Ashton United player, Danny Eccles, the most notable absentee.
It will be Workington’s 1,475th league fixture in the NPL.
