MATCH PREVIEW: Tasty league action at Borough Park

At the end of last season, Reds finished as runners-up in NPL West and Leek Town were just behind in third position.

The two meet at Borough Park on Saturday (3pm) and, by coincidence, it is again a 3rd v. 2nd scenario with Leek currently above us in the table by virtue of their superior goal difference. Neil Baker’s side have made an excellent start to the campaign and are unbeaten on the road so far obtaining victories at Bootle and Mossley and collecting a point following draws at 1874 Northwich and Glossop North End.

Their only league defeat (1-3) was in the home clash against leaders Macclesfield and they have scored in all but one match to date, the exception being the goalless draw at Northwich.

Last season’s encounters finished all square with Town having the better of a 1-1 draw in Cumbria and Reds the better side in the 0-0 draw at Harrison Park.

The head-to-head in the NPL reveals that Leek have won six of the fourteen matches played, Workington have been successful on four occasions with four games drawn.

In cup ties, Town knocked us out of the old NPL 1st Division Cup in the late eighties whilst, more recently, Reds won an FA Trophy tie in Staffordshire three years ago.

Leaders Macclesfield have home advantage against Widnes for the second consecutive Saturday and will be hoping to maintain, or increase, their five-point lead at the top.

  • Reds were due to travel to Macclesfield on the 8 October but that game has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday 1 November due to their continued progress in the Trophy.
