MATCH PREVIEW: Sons will provide another tough challenge

Reds will welcome one of the oldest clubs in Scotland to Borough Park as the pre-season programme continues with midweek action.

Dumbarton are actually celebrating their 150th anniversary this year but will make their first ever visit to Borough Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Grouped with Stirling Albion, Aberdeen, Peterhead and Raith Rovers, The Sons start their season on Saturday in the Premier Sports Cup and can already reflect on three completed pre-season matches – a draw against Ayr United, a narrow defeat against Caledonian Braves and a 3-2 win at Gretna 2008.

They will be match sharp and just about settled in terms of squad numbers although may field a couple of trialists once again.

Reds still have five weeks to go before the NPL opener and the group of trialists and Development Squad members will get more game time against the Cinch League Two outfit.

Stevie Farrell’s side crossed swords with Danny Grainger’s Falkirk outfit last season but Dumbarton eventually suffered demotion via the promotion/relegation play-offs.

Based at their C & G Sytems Stadium for the past twenty two years, they previously played at the wonderfully named Boghead Park and Workington actually played a pre-season game there in 1969 with Reds emerging narrow 2-1 victors.

Two of Workington’s stars from the fifties, Dumbarton born Alex Rollo and Rex Dunlop came to Cumberland after spells with The Scottish club and ‘the one and only’ John Burridge also served both clubs during his wonderful career.
