Workington will conclude a hectic December and a brilliant year at Atherton Collieries’ Skuna Stadium on Boxing Day (Tuesday, 3pm).
They will play their sixth game in two and half weeks in what will be a first ever NPL encounter against Atherton Collieries. Although the first match of December (v. Hyde United) was lost to the weather, Reds have been playing Saturday/Tuesday since and will welcome the short break after the Atherton game.
Once again, Danny Grainger will have to travel with a severely depleted squad against an Atherton team who obtained a superb point (1-1) at Warrington Rylands on Saturday.
That point lifted them off the bottom of the table whilst Reds’ impressive win lifted them a place to 13th in the Premier Division standings.
Collieries and Reds have conceded 103 league goals between them to date which suggests there should be goals.
One has to delve back to the 1998-99 season for the previous league meetings between the clubs with Reds completing a North West Counties League double over the Greater Manchester side during our title winning campaign.
The only other encounter was played on a very wet afternoon at Alder Street in 2019 when a pre-season clash resulted in a goalless draw.
