MATCH PREVIEW: Reds on the road

An improvement to Saturday’s below par display v. Mossley will be the aim when Reds take to the road for the first away game of the new NPL season.

Danny Grainger takes his squad to Prescot Cables on Tuesday (7.45pm) with Bobby Carroll’s fitness the main issue ahead of the match at the now named Joseph Russell Stadium.

The young midfielder was injured early in the opening fixture and will be assessed before kick-off.  The manager will hope to rely on the same squad but Keelan Leslie and Liam Lightfoot will come into contention.

Cables, who finished 18th in NPL West last season, made a good start to the new campaign collecting their first point from a goalless draw at 1874 Northwich.   

Last season’s matches failed to produce a goal in open play with the Borough Park encounter decided by a penalty converted by Dav Symington whilst the return resulted in a 0-0 stalemate.

The two clubs have met twelve times previously, Reds recording eight victories, the points shared on three occasions and Cables’ only success in the series a League Cup victory at Borough Park in 2018. 

Both games in the 20-21 campaign were not played due to the pandemic.
