MATCH PREVIEW: Reds host Purps

Workington will complete what has been a successful October, so far, when they host City of Liverpool at Borough Park on Saturday (3pm).

The NPL West league encounter sees 5th placed Reds take on Paul McNally’s side who are currently 17th in the table.

They have experienced a mixed bag of results to date and, although they have scored freely, the number of goals conceded has hampered progress.  Four wins and eight defeats is the story of their league campaign with a 4-0 win (v. Widnes) and a 0-5 defeat (v. Leek Town) the best and worst respectively.

In cup football, they fell at the second hurdle in the FA Cup, losing at Dunston, and also went out of the Trophy early after suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat v. Sheffield.  Another penalties decider went in their favour on Tuesday when, after a 2-2 draw at Burscough, they progressed in the Liverpool Senior Cup.

Danny Mitchley has become a familiar foe against Reds over the years and he followed the manager from Skelmersdale at the start of the season.  More recently, Kenny Strickland has been re-united with his two former colleagues and he actually played at Borough Park for ‘Skem’ last month.

Their only win on the road was at Hanley Town a few weeks ago.

Danny Grainger and Terry Mitchell both said there was room for improvement from Reds following our win at Hanley last week, yet the same squad is expected to go into battle for our twelfth league fixture.

Dav Symington enjoyed last season’s encounters with CoL, scoring both home and away as Reds recorded a league double.  The away game was played at Vauxhall Motors but the Purps have since returned to Bootle where they will ground share this term.
