MATCH PREVIEW: Reds and Purps ready for BP opener

Workington entertain City of Liverpool at Borough Park on Tuesday (7.45pm) in their first home game of the season.

And Saturday’s results suggest it will be another closely fought affair.  Whilst Reds were grafting to an odd goal success at Kidsgrove, City of Liverpool were being held at home by Chris Willcock’s former side, Ramsbottom United.

Indeed, goals were at a premium in NPL West on Saturday with just nineteen scored in what many are predicting will be a very competitive division.  Eight teams kept a clean sheet in the opening fixtures, including Reds and the Liverpool outfit.

There were only 18 goals scored in the East Division whilst the Midlands section produced 34.  The Premier Division boys netted a total of 26.

Chris Willcock will probably go with the same squad for the first Tuesday night fixture with Steven Rigg unlikely to be ready after sustaining an injury in the Morpeth friendly.

Previous encounters v CoL have gone in Reds favour but the two disrupted seasons have meant we have only met twice before.  We won 1-0 at their temporary home of Bootle during the ’19-20 season then, last term, emerged 5-2 winners at a very wet Borough Park.

Ticket sales will continue at the ground and can be purchased from the office up to kick-off.  Programmes (£2.50) will be produced again as normal this season at a time when many clubs are just issuing ‘on-line’.
