MATCH PREVIEW: Reds aim to convert game in hand into points

Workington haven’t managed to record a win in five visits to the Riverside Stadium so Tuesday night would be a great time to break that hoodoo.

They travel to play Ramsbottom United in NPL West action, hoping to add another three points to the three somewhat fortunately obtained at the weekend, thanks to that late winner v. Trafford.

Rammy have experienced a disappointing season but are still a good outfit on their own patch, winning nine home games so far.  They currently languish in 16th position but 28 of their 36 points have been obtained on home soil

The game, originally scheduled for 19 February, is one of Reds’ matches in hand on Warrington Rylands and a win would take them within touching distance of the leaders.  Marine, who take on Clitheroe, will also be attempting to claw back some ground on Rylands.

The top three all collected maximum points on Saturday but Leek Town suffered a surprise home defeat whilst Runcorn Linnets and Bootle kept alive their play-off aspirations with narrow victories.  Linnets face Bootle on Tuesday.

The game will mark Chris Willcock’s first return to the Riverside as Workington manager so an extra incentive for the Rammy faithful if such motivation is needed.

Reds will travel with the same squad that reported for duty on Saturday with Dan Wordsworth sitting out the final game of his suspension.

Two years ago, Reds had 71 points to their credit from thirty one matches played but the ’19-20 season was aborted with Reds ten points clear at the top.  They never got to play those final seven games so we will never know what the outcome would have been.

We now face eight games in which we are expected to handle the expectation levels but, no doubt, the occasion got to the players at the weekend.

Back in September, Reds emerged narrow 1-0 winners over Rammy at Borough Park, thanks to an early Rowan Roache goal, but it was a close contest and there is no reason to think the return will be any different.
