MATCH PREVIEW: Rare trip to Cumbria for Colls

Atherton Collieries are hanging on to their NPL Premier Division status by a thread and have six games left in what has been a fifth consecutive season at Step 3.

It has been a tough campaign for the team and their supporters, as has the previous four seasons, since winning the Division One West title in 2019.

They have been camped in the lower reaches of the division all season with just five wins to their credit.  One of those victories was at Reds’ expense when we lost (3-4) at their place on Boxing Day.

That was a bizarre game which we could/should have won but, ultimately, finished on the receiving end of a seven-goal thriller!

Naturally, we will be seeking revenge on Monday afternoon (3pm) but complacency has proved our downfall on many an occasion in the past, especially against teams who arrive in West Cumbria on the back of a long losing sequence.

Colls have lost their last six games but have scored in each of them and will be confident they can add to Reds’ ‘end of season’ woes with a good performance at Borough Park.

It will be Atherton’s first visit to Borough Park since we met each other in the North West Counties League twenty-five years ago.

Danny Grainger will have the luxury of welcoming Dav Symington and Bobby Carroll back into the group, after both missed the Stafford game, whilst the rest of Saturday’s squad will be assessed prior to the 3pm kick-off.

Reds are in 15th position with 41 points whilst Collieries are anchored in 21st spot having obtained just 19 points so far.
