MATCH PREVIEW: Rammy always make it tough for Reds at Riverside

After arguably their worst and best performances of the season in their last two outings, Workington supporters won’t know what to expect in Tuesday’s NPL West Division encounter at Ramsbottom United (7.45pm).

The season’s low against Clitheroe was followed up by Saturday’s magnificent display at South Shields but the outcome in both was a narrow defeat and that means three losses in a row now for inconsistent Reds.

Ramsbottom always make it tough at the Riverside Stadium and last season’s narrow win, thanks to Kyle Harrison’s late, late goal, was Reds’ first success there in six visits.  It completed a first ever double over Rammy and proved that ‘mind over matter’ can work.

Players, officials and fans will be hoping the performance at South Shields proves to be a turning point this season but attaining that level on a regular basis won’t be easy.

Ramsbottom have made a solid start to the season and have obtained five points from five games and are currently above Reds in the league table.  On their own soil they have won and lost 3-1 to Mossley and Hanley Town respectively whilst, on the road, have drawn at 1874 and Leek (both 1-1) but lost at Clitheroe (0-2).

Danny Grainger had an eighteen man squad at his disposal on Saturday and that was without the quintet of Bobby Carrol, Greg McCaragher and Ben Hughes (all injured), Danny Eccles (suspended) and Tom Mahone (work commitments) but maintaining such strength in depth will be difficult.

This will be the final mid-week away fixture for the time being and life becomes a bit easier when training, tactics and planning can be done properly ahead of Saturday only fixtures.
