MATCH PREVIEW: On the road to Cheshire
Workington’s eleven match unbeaten run will certainly come under scrutiny at the Apec Taxis Stadium on Saturday when Reds take on high-flying Runcorn Linnets in a NPL West Division fixture.
Indeed, Linnets were the last team to inflict defeat upon Chris Willcock’s side, emerging deserved 4-2 winners at Borough Park back in October.
Calum McIntyre, one of the youngest manager’s in senior football, has a hungry, talented squad at his disposal and the free-scoring Linnets have put together an excellent home record of eight wins, three draws and just one defeat. They have been impressive on the road too with the win in Cumbria one of seven obtained so far.
They did drop points in midweek, however, after being held to a draw at Colne.
Reds only previous visit to the Stockham Lane complex was during the curtailed ’19-20 campaign when a 1-1 draw was the outcome. The two sides didn’t meet at all last season.
Midfielder Josh Dixon is added to the squad which enjoyed a comfortable afternoon at Newcastle Town’s expense last week after he joined the club on a one month loan from Carlisle United.
Runcorn are one of the better supported clubs in the division, averaging well over 600, and a healthy contingent of Reds fans, travelling by coach, rail and car, should add to the atmosphere.
