MATCH PREVIEW: Highwaymen make rare trip west

Reds will host Morpeth Town at Borough Park on Saturday (3pm) in what will be their ninth, and final, outing of pre-season.

It will be Chris Willcock’s fourth game in charge and the three previous matches have produced 2-1 score lines, one in our favour, two against.

Premier Division outfit Morpeth will provide another stiff test with Stephen Turnbull’s squad packed with seasoned, experienced professionals and on the crest of a wave after recent successes.

They were promoted to the Premier Division in 2019 as we were heading in the opposite direction after suffering relegation.  Their debut season in the NPL top flight was going well and they were sitting in 9th position when the pandemic brought football at our level to a sudden halt.

We have never met in a first team fixture at Borough Park although Morpeth were regular visitors to west Cumbria in the seventies when they were opponents of our Reserves in the Northern Football Alliance.

Reds did visit Craik Park for a friendly back in 1997 with the outcome that day a 4-4 draw.

The manager will again be without Scott Allison but both Ceiran Casson and Jordan Little have trained this week as their rehab continues.

Tickets can be purchased from the office – if not today then up to kick-off on Saturday.

  • The Northern Premier League season commences next Saturday (14 August) with Workington travelling to Kidsgrove Athletic for their opening fixture.
