MATCH PREVIEW: Goals & Cash

For the past twelve years, Whitehaven and Workington have contested the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy – a curtain-raiser to the pre-season programme.

And, in addition to providing both teams with their first match conditions of the summer, proceeds from the gate give a timely boost to the British Polio charity with several thousand pounds raised in recent years.

Played in memory of the late Shaun Hocking, who served both clubs in the past, the game has produced plenty of goals with no fewer than 74 netted in twelve previous encounters.

John Carl Benson’s team will be playing in the West Lancashire League again this term and will be hoping to repel Danny Grainger’s NPL Premier Division newcomers who were scoring for fun at the end of last season.

Grainger will give at least 45 minutes to each member of his twenty-man squad ahead of three tough games – Dumbarton, Morecambe and Carlisle United – in the space of eight days.
Admission to the game will be £5.

Whitehaven’s County Ground (CA28 9DD), to the south of Whitehaven RLFC, can be accessed via Coach Road.

Kick-off: 7.30pm.
