MATCH PREVIEW: Gaffer looking for improvement

After the less than convincing performance against Bootle on Tuesday, manager Chris Willcock is looking for all-round improvement from Reds when they travel to play City of Liverpool.

Admittedly, the 2-2 draw was played in atrocious conditions as Storm Barra battered Cumbria and, although a little harsh to make judgement on such a night, the loss of two more points means there is much catching up to do.

Marine still lead the NPL West Division by a point but Reds have played two games more and, on the theory you are only as good as your last game, City Of Liverpool will test Reds’ character and ability.  Last time out, they thrashed Prescot Cables (6-0) and Workington haven’t been able to do that to any team this season.

City of Liverpool used to ground share at Bootle but, this season, they are playing at Vauxhall Motors’ ground near Ellesmere Port which puts an extra forty miles on the clock for the M6/M56/M53 journey.

Workington last visited the ground over seven years ago when a 2-1 defeat against Vauxhall rubbed-stamped our relegation from Conference North.

This will be the fourth encounter against CoL, with Reds winning the previous three, although we only met once in each of the 2019-20 and 2020-21seasons before recording a 3-0 success at Borough Park back in August.

Apart from a touch of hypothermia, everyone survived Tuesday and the squad will be supplemented by the return of Conor Tinnion.

The ‘Purps’ are currently 9th in the table, twelve point behind the West Cumbrians.

Kick-off: 3pm
