It’s the third Saturday of February so it must be derby day as Reds make the short trip down the M6 for Saturday’s return encounter with Lancaster City.

And what is an already important game for both clubs, for different reasons, has added spice because of the number players involved that have played for both clubs.  City have seven former Reds players on their books whilst Brad Hubbold is back at Workington following a spell at the Giant Axe last season.

Further interest in the NPL Premier Division fixture is fuelled by the fact that Chris Willcock recently took over as manager at Lancaster and this will be the first time he has opposed Reds since his successful spell with the club during the 21-22 campaign.

Willcock put together a 66% win rate during his season at Borough Park but narrowly missed out on promotion whilst Danny Grainger’s return was about 61% although the team went up via the play-offs.

City, who have won their last three matches, are currently in 8th position with 45 points to their credit whilst Workington, without a league win since before Christmas, dropped to 15th last week having obtained 34 points to date.

Back in September, goals from Steven Rigg and Dav Symington helped produce a 2-1 home win with the now departed Simon Grand replying for City.

The clubs have met 31 times in NPL action with City winning a dozen times and Reds just behind in the series with eleven victories so far.
