MATCH PREVIEW: Cumberland Cup back on the calendar
Midweek action on Wednesday focuses on the Cumberland Cup with Reds hosting Whitehaven in a First Round tie (7.30pm).
It will be great to see the local competition back on the calendar after two season’s disruption because of the pandemic. The 2019-20 tournament was suspended at the semi-final stage with our last four meeting v. Workington Athletic never actually played and the ‘20-21 competition was postponed altogether.
Carlisle United, the last winners of the Cup in 2019, were the first team through to the second round and most of the other matches have already been completed with Reds or Whitehaven and Cleator Moor Celtic or Penrith all hoping to progress on Wednesday evening.
Chris Willcock will use the fixture to assess the fitness of at least half a dozen players from the first team squad as they return from injury.
The team will be a mixture of first teamers and Development Squad players which might suit an in-form Whitehaven side who arrive at Borough Park on the back of a four match unbeaten run, unlike the hosts who have lost back-to-back matches for the first time this term.
Whitehaven are members of the West Lancashire League (Premier Division) and their squad includes quite a few Workington lads, some of whom have played for Reds in the past.
