MATCH PREVIEW: Club before country
Another important weekend of football with Reds taking centre stage on Saturday followed by the small matter of a World Cup eliminator twenty-four hours later for the national team.
Workington continue their NPL West campaign at Newcastle Town hoping for a first win at the Red Industries Stadium. In three previous visits to the unique ground, Reds have drawn each time.
And with Town being the division’s draw specialists (7), the chances of the 12th v. 3rd clash ending all square are probably high.
The corresponding fixture last year resulted in a draw with Jack Van der Laan opening the scoring via the penalty spot and Reds salvaging a point after Matty Clarke equalised, doing so with his first goal for the club.
Dav Symington ensured the return meeting at Borough Park was more clear-cut, his hat-trick contributing to an emphatic 4-0 home win.
Comparing last season with this, Danny Grainger’s evolving squad seem to be improving week on week although we had three points more twelve months ago than our current total of 33.
Town are eleven points behind at the moment having won five, drawn seven, and suffering five defeats to date.
After struggling for numbers in recent weeks, the manager will have a strong squad to select from.
