LIAM BROCKBANK: We’re getting there

First-team defender Liam Brockbank says Reds are ‘getting there’ following our 2-0 over Mossley on Saturday.

Brockbank was part of a back line which kept a second successive clean sheet and helped earn all three points thanks to Scott Allison and Dav Symington’s goals in each half at Borough Park.

Post-match, our young left-back spoke about the victory, which sent us up to third spot in the NPL North West Division.

Manager Danny Grainger admitted it was a ‘tired’ performance and Brockbank agreed before elaborating.

The 19-year-old said: “It was a heavy pitch, so it was hard.

“We’ve had a fairly long run of games playing Saturday-Tuesday which has been tough.”

“But we’ve come out with decent wins in the last three. I think we’re getting there now.”

It was Reds’ third league victory in eight days, building on the previous weekend’s 5-2 win against City of Liverpool and 0-1 midweek win at Colne.

Having started with three draws prior to the recent upturn, Brockbank assessed our season six games in.

“The first few games, we sort of felt it wasn’t quite dropping for us – especially to get the first goal,” he explained.

“The last two games, we’ve scored and kept clean sheets, so we’re happy with it.”

Brockbank has also had a new role in the side since we began the campaign with two away draws playing in the regular 4-3-3.

Grainger’s men have lined up with a midfield diamond that leaves space out wide for our full-backs to take advantage of.

Brockbank’s goal and assist last weekend and fellow Carlisle United youth product Jay Kelly’s assist last Tuesday has shown the effectiveness of the new formation, a system Millom lad Liam is taking to.

“It gives me a chance to get forward, put crosses in and be involved in goals,” he said.

“The manager’s been telling me to get forward and make sure I get early crosses in so that’s been helpful.”

The focus for Reds is now on a trip to Pontefract Collieries in the Buildbase FA Trophy on Saturday, before we welcome Clitheroe in a big league clash next Tuesday.

Our capacity of 400 tickets are on sale for the latter encounter at the Borough Park office from 10am to 2pm every weekday until we sell out.

We hope to see you there and will be bringing you plenty build-up ahead of the matches!
