Kieran heads for Kendal
Kieran Maguire has cited a lack of first team opportunities as the main reason for switching his allegiance to Reds’ South Cumbrian neighbours, Kendal Town.
The attacking midfielder spoke with manager Danny Grainger on Monday with his shock departure the outcome, a decision that will disappoint the Workington supporters.
Grainger didn’t want Maguire to leave, and told him so, but reiterated the message that he couldn’t guarantee any of his squad a place in the starting line-up.
Kendal had served seven days notice of approach to the club and have since spoken to the Whitehaven based player, now in his second season at Borough Park. He has been promised more regular football at Parkside Road with Kieran of the opinion that he has a better chance of establishing himself in the starting XI there than he has nearer home.
Maguire joined Reds from Cleator Moor Celtic at the start of last season and made eighteen starts (plus a further twenty-one appearances as a substitute) scoring two goals in the process.
He featured in seven pre-season games, scoring a fine goal at Barrow, but missed the first seven matches of the season proper whilst on holiday. Since then, he has made just one start – ironically against Kendal in the League Cup – plus a further six appearances on the bench. He scored a wonder goal in the Kendal cup tie, a fact obviously not lost on Town boss, Steve Edmondson.
