Droylsden v. Workington AFC

Droylsden 1 - 1 Workington AFC
12 Oct 2019 - 15:00Butcher's Arms Ground, Market Street, Droylsden, Manchester M43 7AY

It was probably the outcome neither side wanted but a fair result overall and both teams will have to it all again on Tuesday to decide who progresses in the Buildbase FA Trophy.

After the recent departures of Jay Kelly and Kieran Maguire, Reds numbers were further depleted through the absence of Nathan Waterston, Sam Smith, Dav Symington and Brad Carroll, the latter just minutes before kick-off when he pulled up in the warm-up.

In view of those setbacks, it was a good result for Danny Grainger who was pressed into action himself late in the game after Gari Rowntree was added to the injury list and is now a doubt for the replay.

Amber-shirted Reds began well and efforts from Ash Kelly, twice, and Conor Tinnion were blocked and they were also unable to take advantage of four early corners.

Droylsden were in the ascendency by half time, though, and probably a shade unlucky not to have established a lead.

Rowntree and Ceiran Casson were almost punished when they lost possession to trigger swift Droylsden attacks.  But Rhys Clooney and Domaine Rouse failed to take advantage of the gift-wrapped opportunities.

Danny Wilkins squandered another good chance for the hosts, dragging his shot wide from a central position.

Reds were quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half and their best passage of play saw them open the scoring after forty eight minutes.  Liam Brockbank and Tinnion linked well down the left before the skipper’s low cross was swept home by the outstretched foot of Kelly – his third goal, in different competitions, in successive matches.

Droylsden were level ten minutes later and it was former Workington favourite, Andy Langford, who firmly headed home at the far post, following a corner – a quirky scenario from a player who never scored for Reds in 125 appearances!

Neither side really threatened after that although a good Workington attack involving Brockbank’s cross, Scott Allison’s lay-off and Casson’s firmly struck shot was as close as we came to a winner.
