Fitting visit from Trafford
How appropriate that Reds host Trafford on Saturday (3pm), the 62nd anniversary of Manchester United’s visit to Borough Park for the greatest day in Workington’s history.
With both teams suffering 2-1 defeats on New Year’s Day, the clash is the ideal opportunity to register a first win of 2020. Whilst we were going down to a ‘hard to take’ defeat at Pontefract Collieries, Trafford slipped up at home to Ramsbottom United.
It was their ninth league reverse and underlines what a topsy-turvy season they are having. They didn’t win a league game in August, then hit form and climbed the table at a rapid rate but recent setbacks leaves them positioned in 8th place. On their day, as good as any team in the division but just lacking that commodity we all crave – consistency!
They have won eight matches so far including the division’s best home success (8-1 v. Pickering Town) and the most emphatic victory on the road (7-2 at Kendal Town).
We met at Pennybridge Lane back in August with Reds fortunate to grab a 1-0 win there. A late Dan Wordsworth goal decided a very close game so Tom Baker’s side will be keen for revenge.
It will be the fourteenth league meeting between the clubs with the head-to-head revealing that Workington have obtained six wins in the series compared to Trafford’s four successes. But Trafford can boast the best win so far, a 5-1 victory at Borough Park during the ’97-98 season.
