Recap
Second half goals from Jamie Allen and skipper Steven Rigg secured back-to-back wins for improving Reds, who leap-frogged Basford United in the Premier Division table in the process.
They probably shaded the first half on points and came closest to scoring when a Kai Nugent effort cannoned off the crossbar. Then, when they got their noses in front, defended superbly to eventually secure their seventh league win.
And, in a good all round team performance, Josh Galloway, Steven Swinglehurst and Jake Allan made excellent individual contributions as Reds kept a first clean sheet on home soil since January!
Manager, Mark Fell, had to tweak the starting XI when Ruben Grewal reported sick so Jamie Allen was handed his first start for a month.
And it was he who gave Workington the lead shortly after half time. It came after one of the most remarkable counter attacks I have seen.
Basford had looked almost certain scorers as Tyler Dacres tried to walk the ball into the net but the outstanding Josh Galloway completed the most spectacular goal line clearance to avert the danger. Reds then broke efficiently and at speed and Jamie Allen’s great strike had just too much power for Saul Deeney who was left helpless as the ball hit the net.
Workington doubled their advantage on the hour and Allen was involved in the build-up to that one too. He played the ball inside towards Sam Hetherington who let the ball run into Steven Rigg’s path. His shot brushed off Taylor Anderson and flew past Deeney for goal number fifteen of an incredible personal season.
Basford, a bit cautious in the first half, released the hand-brake to try and salvage something from the game and, although they created several decent openings, they couldn’t find a way past a Workington rearguard with a new found resilience.
They made blocks, won headers and tackles with Alex Mitchell contributing just as well when called upon.
Reds could have added three or four more goals to their tally but two proved enough in the end.
