Danny Grainger’s final Reds interview: Part two

Now former first-team manager Danny Grainger has reflected on his two years in charge at Borough Park in a final two-part interview.

Grainger, who took the reins at Reds in June 2019, oversaw a significant upturn in the club’s fortunes both on the field and off it.

The Penrith-born boss will now join Scottish third tier side Falkirk as gaffer Paul Sheerin’s assistant.

Ex-Reds no. 1 Tony Caig has also become the Bairns’ goalkeeping coach north of the border.

Grainger said a fond farewell to his players at training on Tuesday before sitting down to chat with us one last time.

On the togetherness felt at the club over the past 24 months, he said: “That was huge and a major culture that I want to be part of, a ‘we’ culture – not a ‘me’ and ‘I.’

“The culture I wanted to create was about everybody; whether that was the kit man, Phil [Grisedale] or the groundsman, Dennis [Rossi], who I had a fantastic relationship with.

“People like themselves and the board, we all wanted to pull in the same direction and that, for me, was massive.

“At the end of the day, fans want their club to be successful and I wanted to know what makes their club successful.

“That’s why we went out and met them, and asked them for their ideas on how we can help take the club forward.

“For me, it was about creating a culture where we all wanted the same goal, which we did – and that was to be successful.

“We brought people on board who helped create a different mentality around the club, that we’re trying to be as modern and as up-to-date as we can.

“That was a big thing moving forward from when I stepped in from the professional game.”

As the man in question took training while Danny chatted to us, Grainger paid tribute to his trusty assistant, Steven Rudd.

“I’ve got to thank Ruddy, someone who’s stood by my side from day one and it’s been tough to leave him as well if I’m honest.

“He’s someone I have massive trust for and can’t speak highly enough of,” Danny outlined.

“He’s a fantastic person and coach, and whatever happens, I’m sure he’ll make a success of it.

Grainger continued: “He’s someone who I can’t thank enough for what he’s done for me.

“He’s been there when I’ve moaned about results, anything in training or individuals, and he’s always listened.

“He’s been the best right-hand man I could’ve asked for.”

Finally, the newly ex-boss had a message for Reds supporters.

“Keep sticking behind the lads and keep the club moving forward.

“All I want to say to anyone who’s supported us from the day I took over is: thank you.

“You’ve all been fantastic and I want this club to be successful.

“I can’t wait to be watching in April when you’re lifting the title you deserve.”

Everyone at the club wishes Danny all the best in his new adventure
