First-team manager Danny Grainger says his side need to back up Tuesday’s comeback win over Clitheroe with a result tomorrow at Ossett United.

Reds came from 0-1 down in the week at Borough Park to claim all three points in a clash of title challengers thanks to two well-taken goals by Reuben Jerome.

Speaking before last night’s training session, Grainger reflected on the vital victory, saying: “I said it wasn’t a tremendous performance by the way we do things.

“But it was a tremendous performance by how the lads went about their business, dug in and stuck together to get the result.

“The teams that finish at the top of the table win when they’re not at their best.”

He added: “We weren’t at our best, especially in the first half.

“They took the game to us rather than the other way around and credit where credit’s due.

“Clitheroe are a very good team. They’ll take points off most teams, so taking three off them was nice,” he commented.

“We never get to high and never get too low, we just need to make sure we keep going about our business and see where it takes us.

Never the pessimist, though, he said: “Overall, I was absolutely delighted with it.”

“It was probably the happiest moment since I’ve been at the club.

“It was a fantastic result and you could see what it meant to the fans, the players and the staff.”

“They were a very good team and a very good opponent.”

Onto Ossett and the Yorkshire outfit have had much-improved results since six straight losses to start the season.

A win at home to Widnes and point brought back from Marske on Tuesday will have Wayne Benn’s Wakefield men feeling confident.

“In my mind, the league is a lot better standard this season,” said Grainger.

“I don’t think there’s anyone I’ve looked at and thought, yeah they’re gonna struggle.

“It’s pointless beating Clitheroe at home if you don’t go away and back it up with a win at Ossett,” he stated.

“It’s not an easy place to go. They won’t be an easy opponent and they’ve got a good manager who’ll have them really well-organised.

“We need to approach it in the right manner and if we do, I’m sure we can get all three points.”

One man who wasn’t involved on Tuesday was Jordan Little, who played 90 minutes for Penrith on Wednesday.

On the temporary move, his manager said: “It’s just to get Jordan some minutes.

“He’s part of our plans but we’ve got a great relationship with Penrith at the moment with Billy Williams and Dabba [Dave Hewson] there,” he explained.

“We’ve also got young lads there with Luke Ivison and Mikey Williamson.

“Jordan’s got an opportunity to play against some good teams and get some minutes under his belt so that when he’s called upon for us, he’s ready.

“He won’t be the last player to do something like that.

He confirmed: “We have that good relationship with Dabba and hopefully, when a few injured lads come back, it might be case of getting them a few games to help us and them out if it works.

“If it’s not right, we won’t force it. We’ll always try to help them because that’s the relationship we’ve got.”

Reds sit in second heading into this one, with the mood around the club well and truly turned up since a stuttering start to the new term.

After Fleetwood Town youngster Ben Ashcroft filled in due to Jim Aktinson’s midweek work commitments, gaffer Grainger alluded to BBC Radio Cumbria that the club’s current standing around the North-West as a factor in the move.

On that, he elaborated on the feeling around Borough Park, saying: “It’s positive being around the place, we’re all pulling in the same direction.

“The fans, the board, the club, the players and the staff.

“We’ll all open and honest with each other.

“I don’t go behind the fans’ back and say things just to keep them happy,” affirmed Grainger.

“I like to think the fans have got a good relationship with myself, Ruddy [Steven Rudd] and the players.

“Since we’ve come in, even at times when it’s not been going our way, we’re stuck together and ground it out.

“I think that showed at the start of the season when we’ve had the three draws, then we clicked into gear and we’re now picking up results.”

Finally, a rare free Tuesday is ahead of Reds first-team, something their manager discussed the benefits of.

“It’s always nice to have a break in the midweek, you’re then working towards something at the end of it,” he added.

“The lads have worked so hard since coming back in and it’s been even harder with everything that’s coming on to keep your focus.”

“They’ve kept their focus and every week, they’ve given us their all and if they keep doing that, we’ll pick up results and push up the table.”
