Danny Grainger – ‘over the moon’
Manager Danny Grainger was ‘over the moon’ as Reds made it two wins from two in pre-season against Carlisle City on Tuesday night.
Speaking post-match at the D Marks Stadium, the boss expressed his delight after a hard-fought victory against resilient opposition.
I think it was a very good performance.
We’ve come here and played against a good team; a physical team and the boys have stood-up well to it.
They’ve done great, they’ve moved the ball well, they’ve rotated it and, on another night, we could’ve had another couple of goals.
Reds also looked comfortable at the back throughout, and Grainger was pleased with the solidity, saying:
We never really looked in trouble, apart from a late save from Aaron [Lister] – which was great to have the youngster on the pitch at the time to make the save, so we’re over the moon.
I thought the lads’ work rate and attitude towards the game were fantastic.
It’s still early days in the manager’s time in charge at Borough Park but another assured display has Grainger impressed with the team’s progression.
As I said to the lads in [the dressing room], we’ve only been together two or three weeks now and they’re taking on board the high demands that we’ve had.
Cieran Casson put in a superb showing shielding the back four, and his boss stated how happy he was with the youngster’s performance.
He did really well. As a young lad it’s sometimes hard to step into a senior team but he’s developing.
With Casson being a versatile player, Grainger discussed where his best position is, saying:
I like him in the holding midfield role. I think he reads the game well, breaks up the play and he’s quite happy to drop into centre back if we need him to.
Goalscorer Dav Symington hit the back of the net for the fourth time in two friendlies, which will keep ‘breeding his confidence’ according to his manager, a former fellow long-range specialist.
Finally, Conor Tinnion put in an archetypal captain’s display, making smart decisions in pressure situations, shuffling the ball well and driving the team forward on numerous occasions but Grainger wasn’t exactly surprised by the skipper’s stellar showing.
Tinners was Tinners – it’s what you expect of him. He’s a good talent and leads by example, that’s the reason he’s captain.
Following another training session tonight, Reds will take on National League side Barrow at Holker Street on Saturday, kick-off at 3pm.
