Croft Park classic

BBC Radio Cumbria will re-play our memorable Evo-Stik Premier Division play-off semi final clash at Blyth Spartans with James Phillips and John Walsh providing commentary in their retro match series.

Reds had squeezed into the top five on the last day of the 2015-16 season thanks to an emphatic 5-0 home win over Buxton, coupled with Stourbridge’s 2-1 defeat by Salford City.

With Darlington strolling to the title, it left Blyth Spartans, Salford City, Ashton United and Reds to compete in the play-offs which meant a Tuesday night trip to Croft Park and facing a Spartans side who had beaten us in the north east a few weeks earlier.

Workington supporters can relive the dramatic action in a pulsating match on Saturday afternoon in the Sport programme which is on air from 2pm with commentary from 3pm.

Kick-off had been preceded by a violent thunderstorm and there was plenty of electricity generated in the thrilling ninety minutes that followed. 

We all know that Salford City and Reds reached the final that year but how they got there will be revealed by Messrs Phillips and Walsh.   

This was back in the day when genuine supporters were allowed into football grounds and Reds fans turned out in great numbers to be treated to an epic ‘away day’.
