CONTRACT: Sam Smith re-signs to stay for 21/22

We are delighted to announce that defender Sam Smith has re-signed with the club for the 2021/22 season.

Smith, 26, will begin his ninth senior season a Red after progressing through our academy.

The left-sided defender has made 193 starts for the club has been part of a largely imperious backline over the last two curtailed seasons.

The only man in the current squad to have played a century of reserve and first-team Reds games said upon re-signing: “There’s obviously been a bit of time where we’ve not been sure what’s happening but personally, I’ve just been focused on next season for a while and hoping Danny [Grainger] and Ruddy [Steven Rudd] wanted to retain me.

“Danny rang me the other day so it was reassuring to know that I’m a key member of the team, something which makes you feel good, personally.”

Continuing, the West Cumbrian explained: “I can’t wait to get going and, even though we might be playing some games before it, I’m focussing on next season and getting finished what should’ve been finished a long time ago, and get that promotion.”

Manager Grainger commented: “Sam’s Mr Reliable, he’s versatile and can cover multiple positions.

“He’s got a great attitude, he’s a winner and loves Workington Reds.”

His central defensive partner, Dan Wordsworth, has also today re-signed.

Watch out for Sam’s full interview available from 8am tomorrow morning on our website.
