Celtic and Reds desperate for the points

Reds travel to West Yorkshire on Tuesday to take on title challengers, Farsley Celtic, in a 2nd top v. 2nd bottom clash at Throstle Nest (7.45pm).

And after recent results, the hosts will start as overwhelming favourites for the vitally important Evo-Stik Premier Division encounter.

The league’s top scorers have suffered surprise defeats, recently, to Witton Albion, at home, and Lancaster City at the weekend. It has cost them the leadership (to Warrington Town) and they will be keen to make up the lost ground at Reds’ expense.

And, after confidence boosting wins at Grantham, North Ferriby and Marine, morale in the
Workington camp has been deflated on the back of four successive home reversals.

Lee Andrews will have to make at least two changes to the squad which lost to Hyde United at the weekend. Jordan Holt and Dan Carmichael are unavailable and will be replaced by Kieran Maguire and Sam Joel respectively.

Celtic will be keen to complete a league double having won 1-0 in west Cumbria back in October, thanks to a second-half goal from top scorer, James Spencer. The latter is one of the division’s leading scorers with 16 goals to his credit so far.

Ten years ago, Reds enjoyed their best ever win at Farsley with Andy Cook, Jonny Wright (2) and Gareth Arnison (2) sharing the goals in a 5-0 victory.

Nine years ago, the game at Throstle Nest was cancelled less than twenty-four hours before the scheduled Saturday 3pm kick-off, after news of Farsley Celtic’s demise became public.

We were enjoying life in Conference North at the time but Celtic were about to experience a worrying period in their history.

Thankfully, they survived and have returned even stronger but, sadly, Reds appear to be heading in the opposite direction after having league defeat number eighteen inflicted upon them on Saturday.

A repeat of the character shown by Reds in last season’s corresponding fixture will be the tonic travelling supporters hope for. Somehow we salvaged a point from a 3-3 draw having trailed 3-1 as the game went into added time.
