“Brilliant feeling”

Dan ‘Goose’ Wordsworth described it as a ‘brilliant feeling’ to snatch a late three points with 10 men at Trafford last night.

The Man of the Match and 85th-minute goalscorer spoke about his goal, character in the dressing room, a first clean clean sheet of the season, and squad depth post-match at Shawe View.

‘Goose’ said:

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Especially down to 10 men, and we weren’t at our best today.

It just shows the character in the dressing room, to go down to 10-men and still get the win, it was a brilliant feeling!

Despite a fairly even affair, Reds heroically stepped-up their game when substitute Gari Rowntree was given two yellow cards in three minutes on 73 minutes.

Like many travelling supporters at a rainy Flixton, Wordsworth is well-aware that those results are the mark of champions.

If we want to be up there at the top of the league, they’re the sort of games when we need to win.

We’re not always going to be able to play pretty football, sometimes we’re gonna have to dig in and tonight was a perfect example of what we need to do to win this league.

Another positive in the dramatic victory was the clean sheet, something the defensive unit were desperate for following Saturday’s 4-1 win.

We weren’t happy on Saturday with conceding a goal, but tonight, a clean sheet and a goal personally, I don’t get many so I’ll have to celebrate.

Now Reds move onto a double-bill this Bank Holiday weekend, with Newcastle Benfield away on Saturday in the FA Cup and Pontefract Collieries on the Monday at Borough Park – two games that Goose is relishing.

We’ve got such a good squad with strength-in-depth. Playing Saturday-Monday, that’s not a problem.

There’s plenty of lads who can do a job, and we’re just chomping at the bit now to keep going and get those wins.

Kick-off at Sam Smith’s Park in the North East on Saturday is 3pm, for a preliminary round tie of the Emirates FA Cup.
