Back in the fold

Mark Fell has continued his squad building with goalkeeper Alex Mitchell returning to Borough Park.

Mitchell, 33, has a wealth of experience behind him after coming through the Carlisle United Academy with the likes of Dan Wordsworth, Tom Aldred, Stephen Hindmarch, Gary Madine, Andy Cook and Conor Tinnion.

For the last few seasons, he has served Blyth Spartans in National North and his previous clubs include Gretna 2008, Queen of the South and Annan Athletic.

I’m delighted to have Alex on-board. With him and Danny we’ve two outstanding goalkeepers at the club to push each other and make sure they’re both in the best of form. Alex has great experience in the league above, he’s an all round excellent goalkeeper. Just as important is the character we are getting, he’s professional in his approach, great to have around the club and will drive high standards.

It will be the third time he has signed for Reds after previous spells in 2015-16 and 2019-20.  He kept 19 clean sheets in 42 Workington appearances previously and played in the NPL Premier Division Play-off Final at Salford back in 2016.

I’m really looking forward to getting started. The whole thing came out of the blue really and once I spoke to the gaffer, I was sold and we managed to move quickly to get the deal done. I normally set myself a target of 10 league clean sheets a season which should result in us having a good chance of making the play-offs.

Alex Mitchell

Alex made his first appearance for Reds almost nine years ago in a pre-season game against one of his former clubs, Carlisle United.

I’m delighted Alex has chosen to join us. He’s a really experienced, accomplished keeper who’s coming off the back of a great season with Blyth. He’s been here before and knows the club, and everyone I’ve spoken to who’s worked with Alex couldn’t speak highly enough of him, both as a man, and how he goes about his business. I’m really excited to work with him, and we’ve got a strong Goalkeeping department to take into the new season.
